What is Mounted Shooting?
Mounted shooting is an exhilarating equestrian sport that combines the skills of horsemanship and marksmanship. Rooted in the traditions of the Old West, this fast-paced competition showcases riders maneuvering their horses through a series of obstacles while simultaneously shooting targets with single-action revolvers.
The sport originated in the early 1990s and has gained popularity. It draws inspiration from the historic tasks of cowboys who had to use firearms while on horseback. Today, mounted shooting provides an exciting spectacle that pays homage to these bygone days.
Competitions take place in an arena. Courses are designed with a variety of patterns that include barrels, poles, and balloon targets. Riders navigate through the course at high speeds, demonstrating their horsemanship skills as they guide their horses through tight turns and rapid changes in direction.
Mounted shooters use blank ammunition loaded with black powder, which creates a loud bang, burning embers, and smoke when fired. Ten balloon targets are placed strategically along the course. 50+ courses can be chosen from and at a competition, the courses are drawn randomly. At a shoot, there could be 3-6 courses or stages in the main match. Each rider carries 2, single action .45 revolvers loaded with only 5 rounds. Competitors switch guns halfway through the course. Riders aim to hit each target accurately while racing against the clock, showcasing their accuracy and precision while under the pressure of time. Each missed balloon comes with a time penalty of 5 seconds.
To ensure safety, participants wear appropriate protective gear, including ear and eye protection, and most horses wear ear protection as well. Helmets are also an option for competitors. Horses used in mounted shooting are trained to handle the loud gunshots and the quick movements required during the competition. The partnership between rider and horse is crucial for success in this sport.
In addition to the competitive aspect, mounted shooting fosters a sense of camaraderie and community among its participants. Riders often come together to share their love for the sport, exchange knowledge and techniques, and support one another in their pursuit of excellence.
Whether you are a horse enthusiast, a shooting enthusiast, or simply someone intrigued by the spirit of the Wild West, mounted shooting offers an electrifying and unique experience that combines horsemanship, marksmanship, and a touch of nostalgia for a bygone era.
